Dr. Murphy asked:

Ok, let me start with a little background info:
I am a freshman in hich school and I’m looking to pursue a degree in music after I graduate. I play Guitar, Bass, Clarinet and some Piano. I really want to get a degree in Music Performance for Guitar, and I’d like it to be from Berklee cause it looks like the best suite for me (I researched several music programs around the U.S.). I play a lot of Blues and Metal on my guitar and I’m also profecient in Jazz. My soloing is my strong suite but I also know a great deal about rhythms and chords. I can read music decently (pretty bad at sight reading), but my strength is playing by ear which according to my band teacher I am extremely good at. I know quite a bit about music theory in general, and I am a very fast learner. Finally, my GPA is a 4.0, which I know isn’t overly important in applying for a music college, but I figured it couldn’t hurt.

Now my question:
What should I work on to improve my chances of getting into Berklee? I’d like to know what I should do to 1. Get accepted to Berklee? 2. Get a scholarship? 3. Get a presidential scholarship? (Only 7 musicians in the applying class get this so I am not putting a lot of hopes into getting one)

For specifics:
What Skills should I have?
What Scales should I know?
What Songs should I work on?

I thank you for your time and your help!

How to Sight Read Music

I’ve been doing choir for a couple of years now and I’m missing out on the opportunity to be promoted to a higher level because I’m unable to sight-read and sing pitch from sheet music. I really want to move up, and everyone else in the class has taken singing lessons and things as children or when they were younger so we don’t cover much in class of that. (Weird to me I think, since we don’t learn that in class but are expected to learn!
asked:

A guitar is a fantastic instrument to play. It is easy to play and very difficult depending on what you play. Let’s take a look at learning to play guitar sheet music!

I have found in my teaching experiences that many pupils find reading sheet music on guitar to be very difficult.

Admittedly there are a lot of factors that make reading guitar sheet music notation more of a challenge than on other instruments in certain aspects.

However, the most important factor is in my opinion that many guitarists never decide to learn to find the notes on the guitar. Instead they cultivate the habit of listening, playing and calculating where the specific note probably is to be played on the guitar.

Such a strategy is too slow to make it possible to sight read sheet music on guitar. A wish and then a decision to really start learning the notes on the guitar is much better than to use the before mentioned method to find the notes.

You have to start from where you are if you want to progress and become a good sight reader on guitar.

Learn How to Read Music

I’ve been playing the piano for only a few weeks, and I can read sheet music (I cant sight read proficiently, but I can learn songs with time) And I can playing every major scare in contrary and parallel motion already after only a few weeks. I feel as if I have a knack for picking up instruments considering I’ve never had lessons for any of the following. Would learning the violin without lessons be difficult since I’m not a middleclass family with money to spare to get them? Or would it be a waste of time? – Also, since I’ve been playing a guitar, and it seems in a way relevant to finger placement of a violin (Don’t criticize my assumption, just a guess of relevance) should it be pretty easy to pick up since I am familiar with a stringed instrument?

Learn How to Read Music
