I have a few questions about playing piano?
I played from the ages 5-9, but my parents got divorced and things got complicated so I chose to quit. My dad has played for 50 years, and he’s really talented. I asked after things got settled if he could teach me, but he was too impatient and I didn’t learn anything.
I know all the notes and I can often teach myself by ear. But I see my father sight reading and I think it’s amazing! I was mostly just taught theory and things like that. It was mostly out of a book, and I didn’t play much music.
I’m 14 now and I’m really bummed I didn’t get to stick with it. My dad has a grand piano, and everytime he plays it, I get jealous. How do I practice sight-reading, memorizing the notes on the scale, etc.? I really want to be able to choose my own songs and stuff. I know the keys and all, but it’s reading music I have a problem with. Oh- I also get realllllly slow if I have to play with two hands.. :/
Help?
They aren’t guitar based songs, most of them are scores from films and they are all piano. And no, I won’t be “banging out chords”. I want to learn. And it’s as a hobby, not what I want to do with my life.
