poprocks and coke asked: It’s my dream to go to the royal academy of music in London when I leave school at 18. I’ve been playing piano for around 10 years (since I was 7) but I never seem to actually improve! My sight reading is terrible and I only play at about grade 6 or 7 standard. Obviously I know I will not get into rcm at this sort of level, but I really want to improve–I’m really passionate about this!

marblebeaches asked: Hi!
I have a question. Since I was like 6 1/2, I’ve been playing piano (althoughI really didn’t start getting into it until I was 7). Picked up sight-reading and reading music really fast b/cI was super interested, and it still today remains very natural and smooth for me.
i was wondering..just for curiosity’s sake..does this whole process do anything for cognition? (as in give any benefits?) Is it like learning another language (or have the same/similar effect?) Does it make learning other languages easier if it is?
Thanks

cool guy asked: I’ve always been playing piano by eye-sight and hearing, that’s how I learned songs. But I realize how much more convenient it is to learn songs from reading music notes, as songs that I truly enjoy playing require me to know how to read notes, and not look at the persons fingers playing the piano.
Oh and one more thing. The fact that I can learn to play a song from looking and listening, my parents think that’s a talent, which I don’t understand because I think anyone can do it, but apparently it’s not easily done. Can anyone explain that to me?

initialxd asked: I’ve been playing piano for a year but every time i try to learn a new song, I’d have to write the letters over the notes on the sheet music.
it takes about 2 days to learn a page. But since i practice the song so much, I end up memorizing the page. So if someone were to put sheet music in front of me, I’d be very slow at reading it.
What’s the best way to improve on this and get faster?

Matt asked: I’m a highschool student and in my choir class I’m like an assistant leadership in playing the piano. How do I keep rhythm and beat of a music piece while sight-reading it for a first time? I always get pieces that I never heard of before and I’m expected upon to play it among my peers. I know I’m not a perfect sight-reader because I have trouble with note values. Examples would be 16 notes, 8 notes, and sometimes quarter notes and half notes and whole notes if the tempos faster. Time signatures mess me up half of the time examples are like 6/8 6/12 ex. Do you have any tips and advice for become a better sight-reader?
