Rach A asked: i have a piano class at school, and ive noticed these things on sheet music i’ve never seen before. and i have a lot of trouble practicing. ive been playing piano for years on my own, i got a private teacher for maybe 2 and a half months. and now im a freshman in high school with a piano class mixed with well experienced players, and people who have never seen a grand piano before.
first there’s this thing beside the time signature.
its a “C” with a line through it. i’m not talking about the note middle c. i mean an actual “C” with a vertical line Through it. ive asked friends, and they have never seen it before. the teacher is ALWAYS busy helping someone, so its hard to ask him anything.
Then i heard somewhere that the time signature affects the amount of beats a dotted quarter note gets. is that true?
and i am HORRIBLE at sight reading. i need major help with that. i can read sheet music fine, but i have a hard time playing while reading. i read first, memorize it, then play. my teacher can play anything you put in front of him as if he wrote it. how do i get better at this? are there any websites?

xobeachbabexo asked: I will be a freshman in high school this upcoming school year. I was chosen to be an accompanist for the choir, plays, liturgies… basically the whole school is depending on me and i have only gotten 6 years of experience on playing the piano. I am a little nervous because the previous accompanist is AMAZING at playing piano. It takes me a while to sight read music when it only takes him less than a minute. Could anyone give me any tips???

Moto64 asked: I have been playing piano for about 2 years now, and I am self taught. I know how to read sheet music, but not that well. I can play songs like “The river flows through you”, “the portrait”, “Fix You”, and a few other songs. The thing is is that It takes me a really long time to learn a song, and I would really like get the point where I could look at sheet music and then just be able to play it right there, and read as I play, but I feel like at the rate I am going I am never going to get there. Also, like for example, when I play “River flows through you” I listen to Yiruma play it and he plays it so deep, amazing, touching and emotional (not that I am trying to compare myself to Yiruma) but when I play it doesn’t sound nearly as touching. Does anyone have any piano tips, tips on how I can get better at sight reading, how I can read while I play, and how to make my songs more emotional? Thanks

Joey asked: I’m 17, and I’ve been playing an acoustic and electric guitar for almost 3 and 1/2 years now, I’ve been playing the ukulele for a decent amount of time, and I’ve recently started playing the piano. I’ve been playing the piano for only a few weeks, and I can read sheet music (I cant sight read proficiently, but I can learn songs with time) And I can playing every major scare in contrary and parallel motion already after only a few weeks. I feel as if I have a knack for picking up instruments considering I’ve never had lessons for any of the following. Would learning the violin without lessons be difficult since I’m not a middleclass family with money to spare to get them? Or would it be a waste of time? – Also, since I’ve been playing a guitar, and it seems in a way relevant to finger placement of a violin (Don’t criticize my assumption, just a guess of relevance) should it be pretty easy to pick up since I am familiar with a stringed instrument?

~Claire~ FutureFilmmaker asked: I played from the ages 5-9, but my parents got divorced and things got complicated so I chose to quit. My dad has played for 50 years, and he’s really talented. I asked after things got settled if he could teach me, but he was too impatient and I didn’t learn anything.
I know all the notes and I can often teach myself by ear. But I see my father sight reading and I think it’s amazing! I was mostly just taught theory and things like that. It was mostly out of a book, and I didn’t play much music.
I’m 14 now and I’m really bummed I didn’t get to stick with it. My dad has a grand piano, and everytime he plays it, I get jealous. How do I practice sight-reading, memorizing the notes on the scale, etc.? I really want to be able to choose my own songs and stuff. I know the keys and all, but it’s reading music I have a problem with. Oh- I also get realllllly slow if I have to play with two hands.. :/
Help?
They aren’t guitar based songs, most of them are scores from films and they are all piano. And no, I won’t be “banging out chords”. I want to learn. And it’s as a hobby, not what I want to do with my life.
