Miss Simple asked: Hi,
Our festival concert* is coming up,
if you have ever been in choir, you would know what sight reading/singing* is.
I am in honors choir, in the 8th grade.
Lately, our teacher has been very tough on the site reading and stuff, and we always seem to mess up, and then she gets frustrated with us.
i find it very difficult…i know how to, but i have to use my pencil to count…i can’t just look at it and know what it is.
Are there any website guides or anything that can help me? thanks so much
(2nd)* – sight singing/reading, is taking measures of notes, and singing them by the pitch number, whether it be a flat or a sharp. its hard because the lines are so small.
(1st) * – Festival is where you sing 3 pieces in front of judges, who give you a score 1-5 … the lower the number, the better. The second part of festival is where they give the whole choir a piece of music they have never seen before, give you 3 minutes to rehurse it, and then you sing it…and again they judge you.

asked: I’m a Soprano 1 in Advanced Choir and I can sing with other people, just not alone, and occasionally we have random tests where we have to sing and sight-read alone out-loud and I just can’t do it. My voice will be totally off-pitch and scratchy-sounding, when it’s smooth and really good with other people singing with me.
Is there a way for me to train my voice to do better alone or something?? I practice every day.

Minna C asked: I’m thinking of trying out for an honors chorus group, and one must try out or audition for a part. What do they require?
I remember seeing her sheet that said they had to sing intervals and scales.
What is this like, and would the intervals all start at C? What scales would be typically asked to be sung during the audition?
Someone I know tried out and made it, and mentioned that there was a music reading test which was the hardest part for her. She said she got a reading level of 11 out of 15, but I don’t know what the test looks like or consists of!
Please list the essential topics I’d need to know for an audition such as this. I am decent at sight-reading, and have decent pitch.
This is an honors singing group that is expected to attend sectionals regularly on the weekends, from a highly competitive public school!
I want to try out for alto, and I’m a girl. I’ve been taking voice lessons for about 9 months. Next year will be my senior year, so this is my first and only chance to take part in a prestigious experience such as this!
I’m asking this because I can’t contact the people who got in the program without being embarrassed! I just want it to be a surprise, if I do get in, you know? Tryouts are in a month and a week!
Thanks so much for the help!
