heres the question- i used to have piano lessons but i quit because i found it so embarrassing that i was crap at sight reading! i couldnt improve!
but i want to take up lessons again in september – do you think i should cram music theory into my head and start some intensive sight reading practice?!!?!?
i think its a good idea, but my dad doesnt…
hm…
?
yes thanks i know that lessons are for learning. its just that i could see my piano teacher getting impatient when i couldnt tell which notes i was supposed to be playing

pianoplayerforlife asked: I have been playing the piano for about five years. The problem I have is sight reading. My piano teacher said my skill is way higher than my sight reading. It is not that I can’t play the piano. I have played the real version of Alla Turca by Mozart. I love playing the piano! I just feel that I am not going to get anywhere in music if I do not improve this one issue. If you have any suggestions please answer. I desperately want to be a better pianist.

Banana P asked: I’m considering learning piano by a teacher at the moment, but am unsure whether i should or not?
Is it possible to skip grades if you are able to contently pass?
So far, I can read music pretty well, but am horrible at sight reading and have to literally write the names of the notes on my sheet music to legibly play
as for rhthym and timing, i usually try to get an mp3 or midi of the piece i’m attempting to play and play along by memorizing the sound
i think i still have to cover scales, apreggios, etc before I get there but, will i get i get anything out of learning through a teacher>?
Lessons are quite expensive too, ranging from $20-$30 every half-hour
and i don’t want to waste time and money if i can manage it myself
so, is it best to take lessons or teach myself?
will lessons just be learning pieces and being expected to play them properly?
thanks~~~

Diane asked: I have been a piano student for nearly three years. My piano teacher uses the “counting notes” method. However, there is a problem: Most of the time, according to her, I play my assigned pieces perfectly according to the timing of the notes, but when I count aloud, I am way off. (almost like I now the piece by virtue of sight-reading the music, but have trouble counting). I am a stutterer (was deaf until age 4), so I’m thinking that may have something to do with it. Do you think I would excel more if I chose a teacher who taught via the sight-reading (I think it’s called Suzuki) method? Please advise.
