I’m 35 and have played the piano for just over two months. I’m almost to Level I. My teacher uses the counting rhythm method. She will not let me sing the melody as I count (I have to count in monotone). I do OK at this method, but find that if I play the same songs just by sight-reading (and knowing the value of each note), I can play it much, much better. This is frustrating me that I am excelling at sight-reading (playing Level I and even at times Level II music already), but I’m not even in Level I when it comes to the counting rhythm method. I have a very excellent teacher and I don’t want to drop her. Yet during my practices, there are times I have to sneak in doing it by sight-reading for the pure pleasure of it, because counting in monotone is so mechanical. Will this get better? I don’t want to get another teacher.

I played the Violin for two years (8-9 yrs old). I am now 19 and I want to start playing it..FYI…I was forced to quit, and I am mad about it.
Also, I do have music experience (sight reading, notes, melody, etc.) because I have been singing since I was 8 years old.

I’ve learned 4 or 5 songs now of varying difficulty, nothing too complex.. but I noticed that I still can not get a sense of what a song sounds like from the sheet music. I can read the notes and know the time they should get, but I still can’t make out a proper melody without a recording of the song. If I just keep learning songs from the sheet music, but with a recording to assist me, will I eventually get used to it and be able to sight read properly? Or are there specific exercises I should do to focus on sight reading?

see i can play well by ear, like normal contemporary pieces that i hear everyday, i get the melody easily and put in the chords.

but when it comes to classical pieces, meaning when i have to read music someone else wrote and play by it, not missing a note or a key, i can hardly do it well at all! for example my exam pieces, or other stuff by chopin or haydn or whoever it is!

please help me. my teacher says i’m not playing up to my standard at all, that i can do better, but i some times just get fed up for practising and some times i practise Really hard and it still goes the same… and i just need to improve my sight reading, but how???

i’m 15y/o, Grade 7 in ABRSM and hoping to go to grade 8 soon.

How do you develop sight singing skills for bass and contrapuntal textures and Imitation?
I need to learn this for my aural component of my upcoming piano exam!
1) How do you sing the lower part of the score while being accompanied by the upper part ? I know about the solfa system but it doesnt seem to work when I’m out there trying to sightsing music thrown at you on the spot.
2) I am having problems singing contrapuntal textures.It is hard to listen to yourself sing when there are so many simultaneos layers of music(or even just 2 layers ie Bach) If it is hard to listen to yourself singing, How do you sustain your concentration ? I am always catching the melody instead of the bass and I tend to sing melody instead, when I m suppose to sing the lower part.
3) How do you warm up before singing to produce a beautiful tone? Is there some things you dont eat before practising singing?
