How do I know what piano level I’m at?

calynnea asked:

I took piano lessons when I was younger, but for years now I’ve had to teach myself. I really have no clue what level I’m at. How would I figure that out? Are there certain skills to expect for each level?

My sight-reading ability is limited (I can sight-read the Baptist hymnal because it has an even rythym, but none of the modern music.) I prefer classical, and have played around with some Mozart, but I’m sure it’s probably simplified. I can play fast (trills, etc.) if I *really* work at it, but I struggle on the super fast parts…. You’d probably consider me sort of theory-illiterate. I was 11 or 12 when I took my last theory test, so….

Also, from the level I’m at, what would you suggest I work on in order to improve to the next level? :) Thanks!
Thank you! While you’re at it, can you tell me what this symbol is called? It’s a pair of diagonal lines (sort of like this // ) underneath a pair of notes. I’d heard from someone that it meant play the pair twice, twice as fast as you usually would (I’m probably not explaining this very well.) I’m really struggling to get my hand to go that fast. Also, do you have any tips for that?
Ah, yes, I think it’s called a tremolo. Any tips on those?

How can i get better at sight reading on piano?

Tags: , , , , , ,

initialxd asked:

I’ve been playing piano for a year but every time i try to learn a new song, I’d have to write the letters over the notes on the sheet music.

it takes about 2 days to learn a page. But since i practice the song so much, I end up memorizing the page. So if someone were to put sheet music in front of me, I’d be very slow at reading it.

What’s the best way to improve on this and get faster?
