Tobi asked: I have been playing the clarinet for about 3 years and i am now in the symphonic band at school. The music has gotten way harder and i always fail at sight-reading. Our band teacher told us to internally subdivide, but i seem to have trouble doing it. I cant seem to count while playing music, except when it’s really slow. Is there any way i can internally subdivide while playing?

kayla asked: i started in 5th grade when i joined band and choir. i used to be told i had a great voice when i was younger. my friends and a couple teachers said i was really good for my age. but i stopped singing in choir in 6th grade and recently started again this year. i auditioned to be in choir and i got into bel canto. and after i auditioned i remember the teacher telling me. “i think you might have something.” i thought i did pretty good considering i was so nervous my voice kept shaking. ive wanted to talk lessons but their to expensive. i also started flute in 5th grade and i really didnt gain much interest till 8th grade. up until 8th grade i was last chair. this was because ive had problems with preforming in front of others. but in ninth grade i got first chair flute. i can play really well, especially when im alone. he let us record ourselves playing for our chair auditions. my band teacher thought it was crazy that i went from last to first chair out of 11 flutes. basically thats were it all started. then that same year i started trumpet. and we were going to chicago that year for festivals of music. the song we did was hard for the trumpets in our band so i asked my teacher if i could play trumpet for that song. he did, and i ended up having to do the solo because no one else could or wanted to. the highest note in the solo was a high A. id only been playing for 4-5 months at that time. but i could only play trumpet for that song because i had to play a flute solo as well in one of the other songs we were doing. now im in my junior year of high school and i decided to switch to trumpet completely this because i did marching band this past summer and i really enjoy the trumpet. but i do still play flute in my own time. now ive been playing trumpet for almost two years. i got second chair in band and its my first year playing trumpet in school band for the whole year. ive only been playing for almost two years and im already almost at the level of everyone else. ive had no lessons at all. i just teach myself. i also think learning music by ear is much easier than sight reading. ive been told thats weird…
i also play piano, alto sax, and drums. i have a violin but one of the strings broke and i just dont play it much. this year i plan on get a soprano saxophone and a harmonica to play for fun. ive had one before but it got lost in a move. piano and drums im not to bad at. i dont read music much for either of them. i just go by ear. the sax i haven’t played much but ive started up again recently. and i wonder if i could play soprano in band next year if my teacher would let me cause we dont have one.
ive always thought that learning musical things as fast as i do was normal and that anyone could do it. but my mom tells me that its not normal and its kinda weird (thanks mom) but recently ive been thinking that its kind of interesting how fast i can learn things when it comes to music and band and instruments and singing. but im not sure and sorta what to know if it really is a gift or not. no one really knows of my “talent” or what ever it is because im kinda shy and quiet and i try not to show people what i can do. but i dont really have anyone to show. and i dont know who could tell me if i do have something so…idreally like someone to help me
i love music and i really want to be a musician when im older. i want to play something professionally or many things even. ive always loved the idea of playing professionally in an orchestra. and its basically what i want to do. the thing is, i dont know what i have to do to get to where i want to be. im a junior in high school and decisions about colleges are become super important. and i dont know where the best place to go is or what the requirement to get into a good school are.
