Pink sucks asked: I’m a high school junior, and I want to major in voice in college with a concentration on early music. Only about 3 schools have early music majors or concentrations, so I’ve started looking at other colleges. Most of the degree programs are in voice and opera, and as a straight tone singer I think I have no chance at getting into those programs. I’ve studied voice for 4 years, have been in choirs for 8 years, practice an hour a day, and have 5+ hours of choir rehearsals a week. When it comes to technique, I have much better skills (music reading, sight singing, range, rhythm) than most singers I know. But will my lack of vibrato ruin my chances regardless of my technical skill and hard work?
Colleges I’m looking at include:
For Early Music: Indiana University, Case Western Reserve University, Peabody Conservatory (early music concentration)
For Voice: St. Olaf, Westminster Choir College, Temple University, Manhattan School of Music, New England Conservatory, Florida State (sacred music)
Do you have any suggestions about other colleges to look at that wouldn’t mind my straight tone?

Rosalie….x asked: I am currently 14 years old, year 10 and taking GCSE music.
I also have Singing lessons (Grade 4 exam in 2 weeks)
And Piano lessons (Grade 1 exam in 12 days)
Also recently took my Grade 5 theory exam (results in 5 weeks)
I’m not very confident when it comes to GCSE music, i’m terrified of doing solos when it comes to singing scales in so-fa (I’m not used to learning music this way) – this normally brings down my self-esteem. And I find it very hard to understand things I have never been taught before also.
Piano – I started one year ago, But in my opinion, being grade 1 at my age is poor…so I want to try to race though my grades as quickly as possible – how can I convince my teacher that I can do this? so hopefully I would be able to do a grade once every two terms
Singing – I have dramatically improved in 2 years, But I find it very hard to sight read or pitch notes (I am not very good singing back phases) And even though there are people in my year who are very much higher, grade wise in my year. And it gets me down a little bit – they are always asked to do solos which I can only wish singing. I so badly want to be noticed as a ‘good singer’. I just never am. What could I do to improve my chances?
Thank you in advance

Person83924 asked: i’ve been playing the flute now for almost 4 years, and i have a tendency to not count while playing. i’ve simply never been able to internalize and keep track of the beat. in my head, i try to listen to how it would sound instead. when i first get a piece of music, i also find recordings of it and just listen.
so i have a habit of memorizing how certain songs go, but my teacher is trying to get us better at sight reading, which is one of my weakest points. he also always reminds us to count, and i always feel like i’ll get called out on it or something.
for some reason, i can only manage to count rests and simple rhythms. as i get to more complex rhythms, i get lost easily. then i end up not playing, and my section doesn’t like that.
being the only sophomore of my flute section, with two (terrible) freshmen and one (extremely talented) junior and one (perfect) senior, i feel especially inferior. i have a feeling part of it may be due to my inability to consistently count. (of course, the other part is my low range of notes across each octave).
i know a metronome is supposed to help, but when i have one playing, i seem to get lost trying to keep track of each beat. i don’t know if it really helps me, personally, to internalize the rhythm and everything.
i know it’s kinda dorky, but i do sometimes just play along with the music to get a hang of how it sounds. that’s another way of how i manage to memorize it instead of really reading the music. and i know i erally need to out of this habit.
