I know this probably sounds completely stupid, but I’ve have classical piano training for 10 years and friends have asked me to jam, and I have absolutely no idea what to expect/what I’m supposed to do. I’m good at classical piano, I can sight read alright, but when it comes to how music exactly works, I’m lost and I have no idea what I need to work on to not make a fool of myself when jamming. I’ve had some theory, but its very basic. And yes I understand chords and inversions, etc. and I’ve been doing some research and alot of reading.

And how long is this going to take me to learn? I’ve asked my piano teacher and she thought I was crazy to go after this after 10 years of classical training and went into this whole thing about how you have to be musically gifted to improvise/jam and if you aren’t gifted it takes years and years to learn…..

Recently I decided that I would like to learn how to play the guitar. I don’t really know anyone in my family who can recommend a good guitar. So I need to know which one is a good beginner guitar that has great sound, quality, and most importantly price. Preferably acoustic. Nothing too expensive since I’m only learning so I have a hobby and not seriously wanting to be a musician. However, I also don’t want some cheap guitar that doesn’t sound good and breaks after only a little while. Also if anyone could advise me what I should start off learning and any books or websites that would help me. Do I need any accessories and what not along with the guitar? Here are some of my questions concerning learning:
1. How long and often should I practice?
2. When should I be able to see results? A month or two? A year? (I have a good memory so I can remember a lot but my fingers might have trouble since their short and little)
3. What are some ways to soothe sore fingers?
4. If you have any tips or stories of when you were learning. (If you don’t play guitar then any tips on sight reading?)
5. If you could provide where I can buy your recommended guitar, can be music store or online (no ebay).
Any other things I should take into consideration, please feel free to tell me.

I used to know how to sight-read music really well and I used to play classical, but then I got a new guitar teacher that wanted me to play rock, so I forgot how to sight-read. I know how to tune a guitar regularly to e, B, G, D, E, A, E, and I also know how to re-string a guitar. On the other hand however, I don’t know how to tune a guitar to B, E, C#, B, G#, and C# (and i don’t have a guitar teacher anymore).
