i’llplaythebluesforyou asked: I’m 16 and been playing guitar for 6 yrs and singing for about 2. I started out playing just delta and Chicago blues and digressed into soul, R&B, and some jazz. My problem is that i know Berklee is a very rock oriented music school but is also highly influenced on Jazz. Jazz…I like it one day and the next i can’t listen to it. I love getting that energy that runs through your body when you’re playing or listening to the blues. I can’t get that feeling in Jazz but yet it seems so essential to my playing and my career as a musician. especially for future gigs and session work. I also listen to folk stuff like Neil Young and Norah Jones. I can listen to that stuff but Jazz seems to either be there or not. I know all my scales, modes blah blah blah. It does come into my playing and is important as a musican along with sight reading and ear training but when i try to use all these calculations and notes while playing it takes away from the roots and simpleness of music. Any advice?

pdfaze asked: I’m starting to learn how to play jazz piano and need some intermediate music with some solos in it. I am a medium high skill level so sight reading shouldn’t be much of a problem as long as it’s not crazy. Also I’m looking for a piece with a sort of fast and upbeat tempo.
Also if anyone knows a good sight that teaches you the basics of soloing then please suggest them to me.
Thanks

da bass playa asked: I’m in high school jazz band, and this is my second year in jazz band and playing the bass. I’ve learned a hard song before but this year the music got harder. I’m pretty good at just sight reading a walking bass line and if I work really hard I can usually get a harder rhythm or a latin jazz tune. Auditions are next week and I’m the only bass player but my band teacher is probably going to have me audition anyway. Do you have any ideas of how to learn the song quickly but accurately? I have been playing these songs for about a week now but I just can’t seem to get them. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Even if you’re not a bassist you can still answer this question about how you learn music and give me some ideas!!!
Thanks!

THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
Hello, I am a freshman in high school and I am very talented in music (so I’ve been told). I play in the band at my church, I’m in the school symphony band (freshman band), and I’m in jazz band after school at my high school. I started out at a young age, to be exact, probably at about 3 or 4, just screwing around on an old keyboard. When I got to about 4th grade, I joined band and stuck with it till eighth grade, playing the alto sax. And like I said I’m in high school now and in every band possible. I don’t come from a very wealthy family and I want to attend Berklee for college. I recently picked up a trumpet and have been teaching myself how to play, as I did with the sax (mostly). So first of all I want to address this issue about another freshman at my school, he is in concert band (freshman +). He is only there because he can sight read almost anything. I am incredible at improv. I just was just wondering if two people from the same school can get a scholarship from Beklee. By the way he IS LOADED (tons of $$$)! Do you need to have talent and be…not loaded to get a presidential scholarship from Berklee? The second issue that i wanted to address is will my band director think that I am not as skilled as this rich kid just because he’s in concert and I’m in symphony band?
THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
