Am I learning the piano properly?

Tags: , ,

GYoung asked:

I started playing around 6 months ago becasue i was bored and have a piano that i never gave thought to playing. I learned simple songs first but then moved to stuff like Maple Leaf Rag, Fur Elise, Alla Turca etc. The way i learn however is by reading each cleff separtley, playing it tell i have the notes/chords memorized and then put them together and work out the rhythm with a metronome without further assitance from the sheet music (unless i cant figure it out then ill look at it again). I am getting better at sight reading and am starting to interpret quicker but should i be going into more depth on each piece and studying it more. I also don’t practice scales or theory much, i just practice playing the 5 pieces i know and improvise sometimes but my improvs are’nt very good. When i find a piece say like Alla Turca that has you playing up and down the scale at a certain part in the piece, i figure out what key it’s in and then learn the proper fingering for that scale.

Does anyone out there actually sight read Guitar music?

I’ve been playing classical guitar for some time now, but only recently started using actual music instead of tablature. I also play the violin. Being a monophonic instrument, you usually can sight read music pretty fast as you take it one note at a time. On the guitar on the other hand you have to find the precise note on the fretboard which the music is refering to and you have to play more than one note at a time a lot of the time… you also have to set up your fingering (RH & LH) to prepare for coming sections etc. So my question is…. does any really sight read Guitar music and not “study” it?? I mean is it reasonable to want to look at a score and play it through the first time you see it? (because this fairly easy with the violin)

What’s the best way to learn how to sight read?

Melissa asked:

This is my third year in band. I play percussion. For the first two years of band, I played snare drum most of the time, as well as concert bass drum, tambourine, tom-toms, timpani, wood blocks, etc. I played orchestra bells (aka bells) for just a few concerts. Now I am playing only mallets for concerts and bass drum for marching. I cannot sight read music for mallet instruments…the different notes, such as A B C D E F G, confuse me and I can’t play something without labeling the notes. I cannot just look at music and know which notes they are; I really have to think about it. How can I learn how to sight read quickly but well? I’d appreciate people who play instruments, particularly mallet instruments, to answer this question.
