How long did it take for you to sight read fluently? i’ve been playing piano for a year and for some reason i never learned how to sight read..my teacher is lousy, i was never taught like a beginner he instantly skipped me to intermediate level when i started..its hard for me to play sheet music because i always have to take time to figure out what the note is

I’m thinking of joining my school’s (college) jazz band on guitar, and i’ve been sight reading some charts but i want to know if the guitarist is supposed to play each one of the chords presented in the chart “as is” or is there more options in jazz on what chords you have to play?i only ask because im reading a chart with a ridiculous amount of chord changes and completely different chords changing in less than one beat.

If would also appreciate any pointers on this particular style of guitar playing or maybe some advice on your approach to reading difficult pieces like these. Thanks
