Tab or notes? (Guitar)?
J2Jibbi asked:
I’ve been playing piano since i was 6 (im 17 now) and i recently picked up the guitar. I know how to sight read with piano music, but should i become accustomed to reading tab for the guitar or sheet music? which is used more in the professional world?

i’ d say sheet music. If you can already read music it will be easier to pick up. I think it would be used a lot more in the professional world. But thats my opinion.

If you’re going to be a classical guitarist, read notes. I myself did the same, i got quite good at piano, and then started to learn guitar, but didn’t feel like learning notes. Some rock guitarists haven’t seen sheet music in their life! So you can get along anyway, but for most choice, learn notes, because tabs are easy to learn

if you can read sheet music go for it all the way. don’t even look at tabs
ive been playing guitar for two years and you can run into some serious problems with tabs..

Depends what you’re going to play.
Sheet music is more accurate in terms of pitch, length, etc. But most songs for guitar these days are only found in tabs. Unless you’re willing to go to a music store and buy the actual artist’s book sheet music, tabs are better. If you’re up to it, learning by ear and checking it up with tabs is also a good idea.

Sheet musically obviously.

Tabs are easier to find so I would go with them.

keep using sheet music as much as you can. as far as the professional world, it depends on which type of professional. if you’re playing solo or are playing in a more formal setting, probably sheet music. tabs are easier to find on the internet, and most major touring musicians don’t even know how to read music, so they use tabs or play by ear (like me).

i have been playing guitar for years and i can’t read a single note lol. I use tabs a lot as well as playing by ear.

still read music, that is going to make you more of a background guitarist and better at music theory, but you can def. become a pro guitarist and not be able to read music very well, look at the guitarist for bullet for my valentine, he can’t really read music, tabs is much more basic and easier for guitar tho

STAY WITH NOTES… if you can read music, then USE IT… TABS are intended for people who are too LAZY or too STUPID to learn how to read music… When you can only use TABS then you are stuck with having to find someone to transcribe music you want to play from standard music notation to those stupid TABS.

Learn both
Too many players are stuck, because they only fit in with one or the other.
Take lessons reading notation first. Get some help in understanding tabs. Don’t do one because it is easier,
The best musicians read both and can play by ear as well.
Good Luck
