    good luck !!!
i studied piano for years & years & could never master reading music
the pieces i had to do for recital were all memorized as that was the ONLY way i could play
just everyoine is different & the teachers are different
maybe one could use a different method of teaching that would let you be able to “get it” so to speak

sight reading is all about practice…. get some pieces of music youve never seen before and sight read it =] … give yourself like 5 minutes to look at the piece but then play it as best as you can… pretend that its like a contest and you just have to do it!!!!!!!!!

you’ll need to take music lessons for this. It isn’t something you can do over night. It takes time and practice. However, there are some websites and books available for beginners and you can start learning the concepts. I am self-taught myself, but now I teach others how to do it through private music lessons.
I just love the jazz guitar, so best of the best to you!

in my opinion sight reading comes from years of playing and getting a feel for the patterns in music. i’m sure there are books out there which may help but your best bet is to just buy a bunch of music and practice sight reading different pieces all the time.

Confused. Jazz is all about improvisation. You could write it down but for every 10 times you played some thing you’d play it differently. You’d be sight reading a dictionary. There’s a bigger trend to playing by ear these days.

I play jazz music too and what I’ve learned over the past four years that I’ve been playing is that if you start with the band and end with the band you will be okay. I’m not saying to fake it and not learn how to actually read but if your like me, the basics really help. If you have a good ear for music, then you should be okay improvising. If you don’t, I suggest you learn how to read. Also, ask your band director what he/she wants.
