Lessons are always better but of course you could learn on your own.

While learning on your own is occasionally cheaper and faster, the advantage to being taught is that you can be properly corrected and guided. Even with the talent to learn on your own, if you learn something wrong it will take longer to relearn when you’re corrected.
With instruments this is especially true due to positioning. If you learn a chord wrong, but the rest right, or if your posture is incorrect it will be frustrating and difficult to make the adjustment. With someone to guide and correct you when you begin to learn, you can avoid this.

Lessons are the best way to learn anything, especially an instrument. I’ve tried teaching myself guitar and it was not only hard, but boring. There’s no one sitting in the room with you to talk to if a problem comes up, plus it’s not as much fun going at it by yourself.
It is expensive, but you get (or sometimes don’t get) what you pay for. I had to go through two guitar teachers to land the one I’ve had for the past four years.
