    Do you mean clef? Because alto’s play/sing in treble clef, because they’re not the bass (pronounced “base”) part.

    If you are singing from sheet music ask someone in the group or choir to identify the key signature from the flats or sharps in the staff. Otherwise, ask the pianist to give the key to you.

    There are several methods to determine a key signature by taking the last flat or the last sharp to the right and go to “do.” Where do is located on the staff then that is the name of the key.

    Experiment.

    Different songs will fit your voice better in different keys. You just have to try them in different keys and see what sounds best.

    I’m an alto myself, and find some songs lay nicely in my vocal range in A, others in Bb, others in C, or G.
