trying to sight read music?
joeyburnt asked:
i am trying to teach myself how to sight read easy songs for the piano, but because it’s piano, i always have to read more than one note at a time. so when i try to read and play at the same time, i have to stop at each measure and figure it out before i can play it, and it takes me like 10 minutes to get through a song….so technically im not sight reading, right? am i just wasting my time? or will this help me at all?- and another thing is, after i play a measure, i automatically memorize it so when i go back to play it again, i already know what to play which is another thing that causes me not to sight read……any suggestions on how i can improve my sight reading skills?

no, that’s how you get better is by doing it like that. Eventually, it’ll become quicker.
what you can also do is start really memorizing each note on both staffs, up into the point where you can see it and instantly name it. The better you get with recognizing notes, the easier it’ll be to play. There are some flash cards you can get, or just take the time to really know them.

Just keep practicing! For now, try to play the notes when you see them. When you get more confident, I would try looking ahead to another measure while you are playing the previous measure.

What Top Musicians Know About Sight Reading Music
What do you do before you sight read? Here’s what I do:
1) I look at the beginning of the piece checking for tempo markings, stylistic directions, key signatures and time signatures. Take a look at the first and last chords of the piece to determine the key (in many pieces this will tell you or, the title will).
2) Remind yourself of the basic chord progressions in that key, normally the I, IV, V and I.
3) Skim through the music noting phrases, phrasing, dynamics and patterns.
4) Take note of any accidentals throughout the sight-reading excerpt. You can finger any particular nasty looking parts.
This should all take about a half a minute to a minute which is usually the amount of time they give you to look over a piece in auditions. Before you begin, hear the tempo and the first notes and rhythms in your head.
The purpose of knowing the chords is so you can keep going and not stop as much. If you drop some notes, just keep going. That’s the point of sight reading. The more you practice, the better you’ll get. The more you’ll be able to memorize a measure ahead so that you can keep moving.
I hope that’s helpful.

How to Sight Read Music Lesson
The only way to get better at sight reading is by sight reading.
Don’t worry if you feel like you suck at it. Most people do at first.
Just practice sight reading new pieces of music on a daily basis (or at least pieces you aren’t familiar with and haven’t seen in a while).
Really, that’s all there is to it. It’s a matter of getting your mind to read the language of music faster.
When you begin to read a spoken language, you start out having to sound out words and you gradually get faster.
It’s similar with music – the language of music is arguably easier to learn than spoken languages, but then you add in the difficulty of “speaking” with your hands on an instrument rather than with your voice.
However, the two are alike in how you get better at reading them – practice.

Do you know all the notes on both staffs ? If you don’t then get some flash cards. Learn both clefs off by heart ; you can do this anywhere….the bus or train.
Do you know all the notes on the piano keyboard ? If you don’t then spend time practising scales without any music in front of you. Just say the notes as you play them until you are familiar with the whole keyboard.
Learn to recognise common chords so that they become familiar to you. Make up your own flash cards to do this.
Break up sight reading into three separate steps as above, rather than trying to learn everything at once if you are a beginner..

In addition to what everyone else said, it also helps to sightread the melody alone to catch the tone of the music and feel of it. That always helps to provide some framework. And…lot`s of practice and learning to trust your hands and keep eyes on the music as much as you can.

I have a book of easy etudes that I sight read for harp… it’s best to look through the song first and see basically what both hands are going to be doing before you begin. Look for patterns, etc. Don’t try to do hard songs because you’ll just discourage yourself.
