Practice your scales in the keys that trouble you most. That way you can get a handle on where your hands are supposed to be in that key. It may be benificial to focus just on playing peices in certain keys as well, that way you can learn you way around that key better.

Obviously practice is the key here.

However, if the sight reading is for an exam, and you are really struggling, sometimes you are better to ignore the key signature and concentrate on the rhythm. It’s better to get the rhythm correct than to try to get the key signature correct, failing and therefore messing up the rhythm also.

Although I would still agree that practice is the best way round it.

but practicing scales will definitely help because you will learn which notes to skip in a key.

but i always try to imagine where the half steps are in the scale and then think how everything else is a whole step. then i read by interval from the previous note rather than by individual note names, and try to keep certain patterns that match the key locked into the fingers.

but i think that’s a string instrument strategy and wont work as well on other instruments where there’s a mechanical thing between your fingers and the physics making the note.

try this:
learn a simple song… instead of reading it from notes, write it out in scale degrees. then play it in tons of different keys… play the scale first to identify the notes in the scale and then think about how the notes of the piece are just a tangle of the scale you just played.

thinking “diatonically” like this will help you predict where the sharps and flats will be. rather than relating everything back to C major and then adding accidentals.

Play technical work (scales, arpeggios and such) in all keys. That way, your brain will associate the key signatures with particular sets of notes and hand positions. If you have trouble with reading the music, then play the technical work by reading rather than from memory, so that you also get the visual association. It will take time and patience, but it will be effective.

It’s literally just getting used to them. I know it sounds cliche, but playing scales really helps with this one.

One of my friends goes through his music with a highlighter pen and indicates the notes he knows he’ll get wrong, if that helps.

Practice, practice, practice!!! Trust me it works. Just get random pieces of music and play them. The more you do it the better you get.
