Play in college band as a junior-level entry student with no prior experience?
NYG2983 asked:
Ive been playing music on my own for the past 3 years. I can read sheet music, but i cant sight read well. I play piano and some guitar. I picked up the trumpet for a short amount of time. I liked playing it, but I wanted to learn how to play very well under like 2 months. I learned pretty fast and I was decent at it, but when it got time for me to go to school I found I wasnt able to play in any group during the year ethier in school or in the community, and i couldnt afford to keep paying renting. I know if I have tim/means I can learn to play an instrument well. i am a very self-taught person. I know I need help however when it comes to sheet music etc. Anyway, I really want to play music in college. Im a junior, I have 3 months till its up, than senior year, two years community college, and hopefully a university after that. I have never been in marching band, but id like to be. Do you think by three or so years I could make it to have a minor in music/play in band at a university?

It depends on your skill lever after 3 years, you must try out and hopefully make it, there is not way to really tell you, but I would say pick up an instrament that is more marching band like, sax, trumpet, flute, remember people in University bands, with some exception have been playing forever.

Well, work hard, and that’s the best you can do…!
I’m pretty sure you can major/minor in music even with absolutely no experience… that is the point of college, for them to teach you. Although you would certainly have to start your freshman year. As far as being in a marching band or ensemble, I think your chances depend on the type of university you plan on going to. I go to a small university and anyone is welcome in the marching band, because it is so small. However, at a Division 1 school that is very serious about sports, tryouts for marching band are probably highly competitive, so your chances might be slimmer. At any school you will probably be able to join (or form!) a music group of some sort… so keep practicing. Good luck!
