So I’ve been thinking about trying out for this district band, but I have to sight read music. I’m not very good at it though, so do you have any tips?

Sight Reading Secrets Revealed
  1. Learning to Sight Read Music

Speak the rythym and finger the notes.
I got into the district band using this method.

  2. How to Sight Read Music Video Lesson

Practice, pratice, practice. I used to be absolutely horrible at sight reading, so bad that the only way I could ever complete a piano piece was through memorization one or two measures at a time.

Now I can play through an entire piece at a very slow rate with minimal mistakes, depending on the note structure. Force yourself to sight read, atleast everyday. With enough practice you’ll be able to keep tempo and rhythm and know the notes without even thinking about it, it becomes a sort of second nature.

Practice is the only real way to get better.

  3. sight reading music

If you understand your note values, then just tap your foot to a steady beat and go through it in your head. Try practicing with random sheet music that you find, either around your house or borrow some from friends.

  4. sight reading music

Practise! Every practise session that you do spend 10 minutes playing a piece that you haven’t learned yet/ or don’t know! Give yourself 2 minutes to look at the music and start playing. Don’t stop and correct mistakes just keep playing! Try and play more then the notes , play dynamics, articulations etc But the most important thing is keep playing through mistakes!
