How to improve my sight reading?

Tags: , ,

oh_u asked:

I’ve been studying piano for about a month now. It’s all on my own because I can’t afford lessons.

I’ve learned 4 or 5 songs now of varying difficulty, nothing too complex.. but I noticed that I still can not get a sense of what a song sounds like from the sheet music. I can read the notes and know the time they should get, but I still can’t make out a proper melody without a recording of the song. If I just keep learning songs from the sheet music, but with a recording to assist me, will I eventually get used to it and be able to sight read properly? Or are there specific exercises I should do to focus on sight reading?

Thanks

just keep practicing different types of music and someday you will be able to be great at sight reading. One month is definately not enough time. I’ve played my cello for 10 years and sight reading is very easy for me.

My grand father could do that. He lived before recordings, etc, and he had a small dance band. He could read the music on the way to a gig and then play it. Keep practicing, it gets boring, but it sounds as if you are on the right track. I can’t do it, although I play well. Too lazy!
Don’t be like me, sight reading is the key to excellence.

Sight reading is a skill which improves over time as you expand your repertoire. 1 month is not very long in a pianist life so do not expect any quick improvements until at least 3~4 months.

Basically Practice random pieces of music without stopping to fix mistakes! That’s the hardest bit

To become a beast at sight reading, you have to practice sight reading.

If you sight read random pieces for fun more often, you will find that you will improve your sight reading skills. Just like anything else, it takes practice.

First, pick a piece you havn’t heard of before, and cannot play. Look over the rhythm, count it in your head, look at the different notes and how high or low you will be playing, look at where is the best position for your hand (fingerings), and most importantly play SLOW. Give your brain time to comprehend what you eyes are seeing and what your hands are playing. Doing rhythm and note reading drills will also help. Keep practicing and good luck!

Unfortuantely all you can do is practise, practise, prcatise. I used to have to listen to the music first but don’t becuase it does nothing for you. I have appalling sight reading now. Try and play it a few times first and then if you need to listen to it.
