Learning to Sight Read Music
If the only difficulty you’re having is reading the notes and singing them accurately, take the written music for something you know, play the first note to get the starting pitch right, and then sing the piece, paying close attention to the note values, the rests, the pitches, and the words. Do this with several pieces you know, and then with pieces you have heard but don’t know well. The people at the audition want to see that you can read music, not just follow a tune once you hear it.
To be more confident and less nervous when you sing, practice your correct breathing technique — breathe from your belly, and do it frequently enough so that you don’t run short of air. Our choir director used to have us sing fifteen or twenty notes on the same breath, to learn better control.
Sight Reading Secrets Revealed
Well, you could try singing with your eyes closed for most of it. Not tightly closed (unless it goes well with the song), but open them every now and then. Maybe as it goes on you won’t feel as scared as before and more comfortable about looking at who you are singing to.
Just a suggestion.
