How hard would it be to begin playing the Violin, again?

Nessa asked:

I played the Violin for two years (8-9 yrs old). I am now 19 and I want to start playing it..FYI…I was forced to quit, and I am mad about it.
Also, I do have music experience (sight reading, notes, melody, etc.) because I have been singing since I was 8 years old.
since I have music experience, how long or how difficult would it be if I took up the Violin again.

I played violin in 4th through 7th grade and because of my peers, I quit playing. Around 2 years ago (age 27) I got my moms old violin and started again. For me it was not that hard to pick up where I left off. I was a bit “rusty” and needed to break a few bad habits, but over all it was simple.

    Wow. Tough question.

How much did you practice back then? Did the instrument start to feel natural to you?

Your limitations will depend on how far along you once were. If you built up the muscles and wrist flexibility to play at, say, the intermediate level, then you probably can become a fairly good player indeed–if you practice with a degree of manic devotion–otherwise you’re going to be limited to maybe intermediate material and no more.

Switching to ‘cello would be an idea–cello hand position is more natural and you’ll be fairly unlimited.

It depends on your skill… back then. Where you a good violinist or could you barely play five notes? It should be easy to pick up where you left off… wherever that may be…

  5. What Top Musicians Know About Sight Reading Music

I played violin for about 5 years and then quit because I got bored of it. I then started guitar, however, after a couple years I decided to see if I could play and the only problem I had was relearning the finger positions. I’m pretty sure it would be easy to pick up again, especially if you are really passionate about starting to play again.
