Edward asked:

I’m considering taking ‘Fundamentals of Music’ next semester because I have to satisfy a requirement but at the same time, I want to learn how to read sheet music.

The description of this course:

Introduces the elements of music and musical notations; includes music reading and sight-singing; scales and intervals.

So again, what is sight-singing? Thanks :)

  2. Learning to Sight Read Music

Good question, have you ever heard of sight- reading (probably not) but basically it’s when they give a sheet of music that you have never seen and you have to play it in your case sing it. That’s it but it has music notes and lyrics on it, oh yeah and rests. It’s basically like sight-reading but that’s for playing an instrument. For singing it’s a little harder because you have to know what notes you are singing at all times. Did it help? =)

  3. How to Sight Read Music Lesson

Sight singing is being able to sing a piece of music, or read the notes by sight, that someone has just given you, in other words a piece of music you have never seen, or seeing for the first time. When I was in High school choir we had to sight sing…or sometimes it was called sight reading…music at competitions.

  4. How to Sight Read Music

Sight-singing is being able to look at a piece of music you’ve never seen before and sing it’s pitches out loud correctly on your first try. Often this involves using solfeggio (or solfeg), which is a centuries-old tool that helps you think in a specific key of music using the syllables do-re-mi-fa-sol-la-ti.

  6. How to Sight Read Music

Sight reading (singing) is when you are given sheet music with a melody and you sing the notes on the page, usually as “la”s, just from looking at the notes. Sometimes you are given a starting pitch.

BTW good luck with the course if you decide to take it! I majored in music in college, and had to do this all the time. It can be a little nerve racking at first, but it really shouldn’t be too dificult, especially in a fundamentals class.
