If I practiced 3 hours a day this summer..?
Do you think I could get decent enough to play piano/keyboards in the band I’m in. Right now I’m rhythm guitarist, but our drummer really wants to play guitar on some songs so I’d jut play piano on those. I had about 3 months lessons at a conservatory, can read music (not well, mostly just read to learn melodies and key signatures, can’t really sight read and forget bass clef.
Our style is rock/progressive rock/funk/ anything we feel like, so I’m not talking anything complex like jazz improv or classical recitations, just decent enough to play in a band. I know how to form some chords already and can play half of the major scales in the circle of 5ths. Do you think I could be decent enough by september, when we’re all gonna be rooming in the same house at college together? Thanks
Yes, I do know the fingerings and can play two octaves at a time hands together, understand how to form major chords, etc. Yes I do know the difference between major and minor. Don’t ask questions with assumptions built into them to feed your own musical ego
I’ve been playing guitar 10 years, obviously I would pick most of that up.

You wouldn’t be good enough. First you must learn music (properly)and that may take you some time. You need to learn how to read treble and bass clef and have the co-ordination. Music is like a whole new language, in order to be decent you need to be fluent. Chords on piano are a bit more complex than on guitar. I’m not sure if you even know what notes your playing in that chord, you just know the name of the chord and the position you move to. You could be playing first inversion chords, dominant seven chords, or using the pedal. You say that you can play some major scales but can you really? Do you know the correct fingering of a major scale? DO you know the difference between a tone and a semi-tone? Do you know the difference between a major and a minor scale? (And don’t just say major is happy, minor is sad).

YOU CAN GET BETTER IN A MONTH! Look, I had experiences like that as well, all I can say as a Musician/Vocal coach, is that IF YOU WANT TO DO IT, there is not TIME LIMIT! IF YOU LOVE IT, YOU LEARN IT! AND QUICK! Now here is a little hint… The times when you practice, don’t think ” YOU HAVE TO DO IT!” Just DO it and do it for FUN, FORGET that you are practicing because you HAVE to, just DO IT! If you do that, your learning will go so much quicker!! I believe you can learn more than you can every imagine even by just ONE HOUR A DAY!
Just imagine it and take it as if it was something you are having FUN WITH! Do not think it as work! *wink* Let me know how it all goes!
God Bless you!
I Hope I helped!
PS. Pray about it!
