Am I the only one that thinks guitar is a better instrument than piano?

Tags: , ,

Regular Guy asked:

all those snobby rich kids in school tease me because I play guitar
they all play piano and have been doing so for years and years

anyways to me the guitar is a better instrument for many many reasons
it’s ability to bend strings…
it is much more difficult to master (especially sight reading) …not to mention different tunings
it has way more techniques to learn (picking, finger picking, hybrid, slide, bend, vibrato, sweep, use of trem, so much more)
to add its a MUCH more versatile instrument (in many many genre of music, guitar is the melody besides vocals)

Lastly i would say that guitar is ALL ABOUT TONE…sure different pianos can sound different but for guitars everything makes the sound different….
your fingers…
pick you use, the way you pick, the shape, the thickness, the material
strings ..the gauge, the material, etc
guitar..i can go on forever, but to keep it short…the wood (fretboard, neck, body) the style (solid, semi, hollow), the scales, the frets, the bridge…pickups
amp also can go on forever…look at how many brands and series…ALL have different TONE
im not gonna include stompboxes because those are effects…if i didnt it wouldnt be fair

to me …without those sophistication composers or classical music, i would say that piano is way out of guitar’s league as an instrument

how can they make fun of me …………i dont get it

Can anyone play both? I think that would be the well rounded opinion. To me both instruments are awesome and I’d love to play either one well.

Think maturity is the reason for poking fun not dependant on the type of instrument you play. Anyone who can dedicate themselves to learning anything over a long period of time gets my vote – wish I’d been that dedicated then maybe I could play guitar well now!

I’m sure you’re not the only one who prefers the guitar to the piano. Keep in mind, however, that a great deal of piano playing is how the instrument is played as well. Tempo, intensity, how hard you hit / how long you hold keys. Everything. Playing any musical instrument is an art in and of itself.

Personally, I like both instruments for different moods. Neither of them hold a candle to violin or french horn, though, in my opinion…

ok im not the snotty rich kid type i promise! i have to play piano on the electric key board and i do admit it takes soul to play guitar and its hard too! but with piano you have to get the right beats down remember where all of the note and chords are how to get rhythm into the song and you also guitar can be in every song piano cant! so its harder to choose the right song. but don’t get me wrong its not right for the snotty kids to make fun of you guitar takes skills too so keep up your skill and don’t let them change who you are.

Wow, there’s a new one. Piano players teasing a guitar player. I’m visualizing a young Liberace picking on a young Slash. Unfortunately many kids are just petty and mean. You sound like a good kid, just keep doing what you’re doing man. Here’s a test. Name me 10 great guitar players. Now name 10 great piano players. You want to really drive the point home…name me 10 cool piano players. Is John Tesh considered cool? I rest my case your honor.

    It is all opinion.

    My opinion:
Piano and Guitar are both equally hard to learn. Ive played guitar and found that it was very difficult to learn but when I switched to piano I found that it was easier for me. My friend on the other hand is a fast learner on the guitar and is really good but he can’t make out a melody on the piano.

So in conclusion, whichever one is better is all opinion. And don’t worry about what those snobby rich kids think. Who is better depends on your skills as a musician, not what instrument you play.

They would make fun of you even if you could play the guitar with your hands and the piano with your feet
while singing. They don’t appreciate music or people.
I could never choose between the piano and the guitar. I play them both well and have never thought about what’s cool. If you have enough talent, it beats cool every time.

While you can get a wider variety of sounds out of one guitar, you can play a wider range of octaves on a piano. A pianist can cover the complete ranges of both a guitar and a bass guitar. Are you forgetting about the keyboard? To compare and electric guitar to a piano is unfair. A fair comparison would be an acoustic guitar and a piano, and in that case, there is more scope to change the tone on the piano, and at least as many playing styles/techniques. You might compare an electric guitar to a keyboard, in which case the keyboard can do many things a guitar can do – including tremelo/vibrato – and it has a few tricks of its own. Piano/keyboard fits perfectly in as many genres of music as guitar, from prog rock, to classic, and it is the keyboard that wouldn’t sound out of place in many modern genres (hip-hop, RnB, techno, electro, trance, dance).

Guitar is not better than piano, they both have their own advantages and disadvantages (as with any instrument), and they both have their places in the world of music.
