Am I learning the piano properly?

GYoung asked:

I started playing around 6 months ago becasue i was bored and have a piano that i never gave thought to playing. I learned simple songs first but then moved to stuff like Maple Leaf Rag, Fur Elise, Alla Turca etc. The way i learn however is by reading each cleff separtley, playing it tell i have the notes/chords memorized and then put them together and work out the rhythm with a metronome without further assitance from the sheet music (unless i cant figure it out then ill look at it again). I am getting better at sight reading and am starting to interpret quicker but should i be going into more depth on each piece and studying it more. I also don’t practice scales or theory much, i just practice playing the 5 pieces i know and improvise sometimes but my improvs are’nt very good. When i find a piece say like Alla Turca that has you playing up and down the scale at a certain part in the piece, i figure out what key it’s in and then learn the proper fingering for that scale.
My timing is not my worry here im pretty confident i have that part down, Am i limiting myself by basically just memorizing the piece?

Do you write the fingering for each note? That’ll help a lot.

And try some scales, it helps memorize the key signature.

It is good to memorise a piece because you can do so much more with a piece of music if you know it well (which you obviously do!). However – it is important to be able to read and grow as a pianist so that you can play more songs and sight read well. It always goes a long way to be able to play a piece relatively well when you first see it – but that does take a lot of time and practice. Just keep practicing and growing your repertoire and you will do well!

A huge part of piano is technique. If you don’t practice technique you could end up with arthritis because you dont play properly. also proper technique changes the sound of a piece dramatically and it makes it much easier to play. I would buy a technique book for exercising your fingers. Hanon is the book i use.

i think there’s nothing wrong with that. although, if i may suggest…practicing it per staff and hand. then combining them per staff. That way it might be easier.

Its a good thing to memorise piece..but not a good habit…i mean, for certain melodies(in the beginning) you may come across the need for memorising the melodies…but, afterwards…(that is after a year) you should be able to develop your musical ear that will guide you out through your lifetime…and yea, being a professional..i will advice you to practice the scales daily…scales are actually the “Real” music…song is just the application of it and is a small thing before the scales, chords and the arpeggios…

thats a good way of learning, but you should learn theory too, so you understand what you’re reading. Many times you think you do, but there is so much more to what you are seeing, and it helps the song sound better. And just playing the notes doesn’t create a song. If you really feel it, and play the dynamics, it makes such a great difference.

If you have to ask in a forum like this, chances are that you are not doing it properly. There are reliable experts who can show you the proper technique and start you on your way. Even if you prefer to go it alone, I’d at least begin with some help. The problem is that if you do it yourself, you will come to a point where your lack of proper technique will stop you from getting any better.

You should be looking at new pieces every day, even if they are only little exercises, to work on your reading. I have very dark things to say about people to memorize to avoid learning how to read…I won’t blast you with them because you are trying. Every time you struggle, pick up a magazine and think about where you’d be right now if somebody had let you get out of learning to read.
