should i audition or not?
Hiya asked:
ok, well, i have this audition thing for violin. it’s pretty tough, and i don’t know if i want to audition. the thing is……i have been working on this music piece for about 2 months now,and i don’t want to disappoint my violin teacher and mom. (my dad is cool with w/e i choose, he just wants me to b happy.) i am actually re-auditioning. the requirements r the excerpts they provide and a random sight reading piece. the sight reading was pretty hard. also, i think it might interfere with school work, because they have rehearsals every Mon. at about 8pm during the school year. so basically my problem is: if i do it, it’ll have to work SUPER hard and i might b bad. if don’t, my violin teacher and my mom will most likely be disappointed in me,maybe even mad. i feel, rly nervous, scared, pressured, stressed, and i’m in a turmoil. srry i cant explain the situation so well, my head is all clouded up, and i cant rly think straight about this. but, i’ll add as much more detail as i can. plz help me, thx! btw, the orchestra group is called: TYOF (The Youth Orchestras of Fairfax) website is: http://tyof.org/news.php
wow, even though it’s just 3 answers…..i feel better. (lol) ok, thx guys!

Do you think you’ll regret it if you don’t?
We regret more things we didn’t do than things we did.

You sound like you’re suffering from a great deal of stress; this is never good for anyone.
And you shouldn’t be doing, never do, anything just to please someone else: i.e., your teacher and mother.
If your father is/was aware of this, and truly wants only for you to be happy, he should step in and say, “Enough, already: you don’t have to audition”.
If you don’t feel up to making the decision to, or not to, audition, then I would recommend you seek a counselors advice at school.
No one on this very public forum in my opinion, could possibly know you or your circumstances well enough, to be competent in advising you, one way or the other.
Take care, and good luck,
Alberich

definitely audition! it might be really hard but it will be an awesome experience and opportunity and you won’t know what its like until you try. You might never get to have a chance like this when you’re older so do it while your still young. good luck!

if its one thing im starting to learn about life is i have to make the decisions for myself and my abilities and not for what my mom wants.
the question you need to ask yourself is if you can do it all…if you know deep down you cant, then tell them no…your no good if take on more than what you can handle, and you may potentionally wreck future chances…
im to the point where i am sick of being a people pleaser….so i say do what you think YOU can do and not what everyone else WANTS you to do.
: )
good luck!!

Alas, when you work really hard for something and succeed, you are often rewarded with more work. It sounds like there are some hard questions you need to ask yourself, the first being “Why am I doing this” Is it for you or your cheering section (Mom, teacher)? You may want to sit down and have a talk with them…it could turn out that they will support you either way, and the only one stressing is you.
That being said, if you want this opportunity for yourself, then you should go for it. There was a great vignette in one of the “Chicken Soup” books where a student submitted a story to the New Yorker and received a rejection notice. He was pretty down until his teacher said “Wow, a rejection letter from the New Yorker. That’s still a letter from the New Yorker and it’s closer than lots of people will ever get”

Okay, I will try and answer this as subjectively as possible.
I happen to be a youth orchestra conductor/violinist/teacher. It sounds like you have put in some time on this audition. My advice is to just go ahead and do it. What is the worst that can happen? You might not get in or you will be accepted into the program. I can tell you from personal experience that being a member of a youth orchestra can be a positive one. You will be surrounded by kids your age (or close to) who share similar interests (music). There is a good chance you will share other interests as well. Sports, favorite school subjects, popular music etc.
I more than understand your reasons for being nervous. All I can say is that if you truly enjoy making music, it ends up being worth it.
I wouldn’t worry too much about disappointing your mom and teacher.
In the end, they both want what’s best for you (at least I hope so).
Give yourself a fair shot and just do your best. After you are done playing, it’s out of your hands. Good luck!
