How do I learn to sight sing?

Tags: , ,

Joshua Walsh Tierney asked:

I want to learn how to be able to sing the right pitch reading music, so that I can sing any song as long as I have the sheet music. How can I train myself to do this? What I want to do is to be able to sing the individual parts of Mozart and Beethoven’s string quartets. I also just think that being able to sing scores accurately (if not very well) will help me to eventually be able to play an instrument, possibly violin. Thanks

Actually you have it the other way around. Having taken Piano and other instruments since the age of 5, I’ve seen many people come into music lessons thinking they’ll just catch on to sight singing. Most singers have an instrumental background BEFORE they learn to sight sing.
If you think about it, You’ll only know how to sing the right keys at first glance- if you know what the keys are and of course how they should accurately sound. Don’t get me wrong it’s possible, but you must of course know the keys, before singing them at right pitch
