heres the question- i used to have piano lessons but i quit because i found it so embarrassing that i was crap at sight reading! i couldnt improve!
but i want to take up lessons again in september – do you think i should cram music theory into my head and start some intensive sight reading practice?!!?!?
i think its a good idea, but my dad doesnt…
hm…
?
yes thanks i know that lessons are for learning. its just that i could see my piano teacher getting impatient when i couldnt tell which notes i was supposed to be playing

  1. What Top Musicians Know About Sight Reading Music

The WHOLE reason WHY you take lessons is to learn! Don’t feel embarrassed! Everybody has to start from the beginning sometime. I say you should study the basics, but don’t CRAM everything into your head. Practice and lessons are the best things you can do. Good luck!

Well, don’t try to cram in too much at once.

I learned literally all my notes and scales on a piano years before I did ANY music reading…

I’m just now learning how to sight read, and I suck at it so far.
But give me the sheet music I’ll have it down in less than an hour :]

I’d say go for it, but don’t over work too much,
    practice makes perfect.

    I totally feel your pain!
I am a music teacher about to enter my 3rd year, and even after having spent 4 years at college studying music education, I still can’t sightread very well on piano.

I really couldn’t sightread anything until 11th grade or so, since I’d never taken music lessons of any kind until that point. All of my music theory came from chorus class. I learned to sightsing really well, and it did help me with my piano sightreading. Granted, voice is my instrument and always has been, so I understand that it can be embarassing or scary to actually SING what you’re reading. But learning vocal sightreading really did help me with instrumental reading, and I have since learned to play the basics on virtually any standard instrument.

So, my advice is to learn to sightsing, at least marginally well. Good luck!

  4. Learning to Sight Read Music

i say dont try and cram exxcessive amounts in, but what harm can it possibly do just to try it over the summer just so you start to get back into it. and dont be embarrassed because that person who is teaching you was just like you once upon a time they were at the same stage as you. i say go for it lol
    hope that helps!

  5. How to Sight Read Music Video Lesson

Practice is necessary. Now don’t stress out about studying up on music theory before your lessons start up, but if you can convince yourself to do it, all it will do is help you. Even if you master one little thing (consciously or not) it will turn into something new that you get to learn sooner.
So don’t stress over it. But if you can make yourself study or practice, there is absolutely no reason not to, I teach guitar, but this sort of idea applies to any instrument.
