Moms, or Dads. What do you do with your baby?

Daniel’s Mum~RIP Gabriel asked:

Just out of curiosity, what do you do with your baby, when you don’t know what will make them happy anymore. My son is 9 months old, and the last 2 weeks have been horrible. He doesn’t want to be held, he doesn’t want to sit and play, he doesn’t want to lay on the floor and play, he doesn’t want to stand. He does cry, scream, fuss, drool(lol of course) and wiggle out of my grasp to be put down every 5 minutes.
I try my hardest to please him, I let him walk as I hold his hands, I sit with him and rattle anything in sight, I read, I put music on and we dance around until he doesn’t want to(5 minutes), I give an extra bottle in case he is feeling hungry still. Then I think that he might be over stimulated, and I try to quiet everything down, and try for a nap. He works himself into a frenzie and takes forever to put to sleep. I am not complaining, and I realize this is what babies do…but I wonder if I am missing something?
We try to stick to a schedule and everything happens normally at the same time each day(meals, bath, play and naps) within an hour or so.
I feel like I am letting my boy down somehow, that I should be able to better calm him and make him comfortable. Can anyone relate? And maybe offer suggestions? Thanks in advance!
He is sleeping through the night most nights, usually for 11 hours straight. He has been teething, but the 4th one has come through the gum now and he doesn’t seem to be as aggravated (pulling ears, hands in mouth) as normal.
Thanks for your answers though…a walk might work I’ll try tomorrow.

When I have no idea what to do anymore, I take him for a ride in the stroller, or put him in the car and go somewhere. I find my son tends to get bored very easily!

My son is usually pretty good and rarely fusses (but he is older, he’s 19 months) but on the occasions where nothing seems to please him, I just give him a snack =]
I know that’s not necessarily the ‘best’ thing to do, but it does usually calm him down.
Since your son is 9 months, I’d suggest giving him a Ritz cracker to gnaw on to occupy himself and calm him down a little.

PS- give him a healthy snack of course! I don’t give my son cookies or anything because he’s fussy, but I’ll give him a banana or some apple slices because I always think that maybe he’s fussing because he’s hungry (he tends to have growth spurts out of the clear blue which would make him exceptionally hungry at times and I’d have no way of knowing ..)

His teeth may be coming in and he is alittle irritated. It will pass. The fact that you feel that way shows that you are not letting him down.

sounds like you are a fantastic mother and are doing a really good job. Dont worry I dont think you are doing anything wrong. It sounds to me like your little guy just may be teething or something. It wouldnt hurt to take him to the doctor and have him checked over. maybe he has an ear infection or something. Keep doing what you are doing and hang in there. Just be there for him like you are. It wont last forever.

Is there any chance he could be teething? Or ill?
How often is he napping throughout the day?

Perhaps attempting to put him down for his naps BEFORE thinking he is overstimulated is the key. You should try putting him down, if he is still miserable and won’t sleep, after a while get him up for a play, try to reverse the routine is what I’m saying I suppose.

Something keeps making me think teeth. Hmm. Have you tried using teething gel on him? The interesting taste may also help to settle him, not only numb his gums.

Is he sleeping through the night? Sorry I can’t be of more help. Hang in there.

are you sure he’s not teething? This can cause babies to start to break from their routine. check to see if his gums are white at all. there’s plenty of things to do with teething babies. :)

i know how you feel my baby gets that way sometimes and i find myself saying that i dont know what to do with him, but somehow i figure something out and he calms down(btw he is teething)….i know that doesnt help but i will say that even though it is winter time i try and take him for a walk when its not too cold, so maybe if that is something you havnt tried you could go to a quiet place(like a trail or park) and just get some fresh air(i dont know if you live somewhere where you could do that and it isnt frigid)…he could be going through a growth spurt,or be bored with the play routine, or possibly overstimulated, but it seems like youve tried alot, its most likely just a phase, hope he seems better soon…good luck

Try a walk – or if nothing else, try a bath with some of the lavender bath stuff in it. My daughter had days that were awful, but I could put her in the bath and let her splash for a few minutes, and it would settle her down – sometimes, they just need a change. You can also try taking him to the park – sometimes a change of scenery is a great thing – especially for kids that age! Good luck to you!

I have those days, my son just acts like I’m such a bore, it just seems like nothing works. Those are the days that we end up sitting in his room for hours while he shows me all of his toys… or I try to bring the kid out in me, I act as silly as I possibly can, and sometimes he seems pretty amused by that. If that doesn’t work I offer a snack, the puffs were a life saver for me, and if my son was completely bored out of his mind, and I was completely boring to him I found puffs or crackers always gave him something to do for a while.
But it’s so cold here that it’s not possible to go outside, sometimes we just go for car rides and he likes that, or we go to the store, or something like that so he can get out of the house.
But when it’s warm I try to take him out in his stroller for a little bit, now that he’s walking on the warmer days I always take him to the park, and he never really fusses on those days.
You son might just be getting tired of being in the house, his teeth might be bothering him and he might just be in a bad mood, just do what you can, your not letting the little guy down!
